Imovie movies to imovie?

I want to make a movie trailor and you know how you cant upload pictures to them? well i made a video of a slide show and try to upload it as a movie to put into my trailor. how come it wont work? I have the newest version of imovie, i just bought my mac book pro in june and am still learning it.
