Is it a canker sore or a cold sore??!!?

I've been experiencing canker/cold sores off and on since the age of 7(which leads me to lean more toward it being a canker sore). I've had an uneventful childhood and teenage life(first kiss was at 18, yikes) but had these sore off and on up until age 15. Now 10 years later, right as my menstrual cycle is about to begin a sore appears on my lip. It's bothersome and painful. I'm confused as to what it can be exactly. If it is a cold sore(herpes simplex) how could it have been contracted. If it is a canker sore, was it triggered by my menstruation? The thought of me having herpes at 7 is unsettling to me. Any help/information would be appreciated!
